Nebojša Kamenčić (39) from Plažane near Despotovac has been undergoing dialysis three times a week at the General Hospital in Ćuprija for the past 16 years due to renal failure. Despite his mother Nevenka donating a kidney to him, his body rejected it, and they have been searching for a solution ever since. Hopes of finding a healthy organ in Russia and Italy were dashed, but now there is a program in Belarus that offers hope. However, the costs, including a companion, can reach up to 100,000 euros, which the struggling family cannot afford on their own. Therefore, the local government and organizations in Despotovac, as well as numerous individuals, have joined forces to raise funds. So far, only 40% of the needed money has been collected.

Nebojša shares his experience of feeling devastated when his body rejected his mother’s kidney, as he was not mentally prepared for dialysis. He thought he could continue living normally after the operation, but it was a shock. It was especially difficult in the first few years until he adapted to the new circumstances. Despite facing significant health problems, including osteoporosis and high blood phosphorus levels, Nebojša remains strong. He took the opportunity to study and become a manager while attending an extension of the Novi Sad Faculty for Service Business in Jagodina. He also creates various models on a 3D printer, works with wood, and enjoys nature with friends. He used to go on ski weekends every year but can no longer do so due to leg pain.

Those willing to help Nebojša can send money to his bank account. He expresses his frustration at not being able to plan anything, work, or start a family, and the constant restrictions on his daily life such as diet and thirst. He is aware that the lifespan of a cadaveric kidney is only five to ten years but hopes for a normal life during that time, believing that medical advancements may bring a cure for his illness. Nevenka, his mother and a teacher, finds it difficult to see her son return from dialysis, as he is often despondent and quiet, requiring her to stay strong.

Nevenka shares the challenges Nebojša has faced, including several close calls with his life and moments of emotional breakdown. However, he overcame them, especially for the sake of Olga, his niece, whom he wants to see grow up. Nebojša’s friends wear long-sleeved shirts when they go out at night to match his attire and conceal the dialysis scars, showing their support during this challenging time.

The community’s support and contributions are greatly appreciated by Nevenka, who is grateful for everyone who has participated in the humanitarian action. Nebojša remains optimistic that he will find a kidney and be able to lead a more normal life with the advancements in medicine and the generosity of those around him.
